NEC began business in Europe in the 1970s, and currently accounts for over 4000 employees. NEC Laboratories Europe has been established in 1997 in Heidelberg, Germany, as NEC’s second European research facility. Special emphasis of the Heidelberg site lies on software-oriented R&D for the next-generation Internet, such as new communication architectures and protocols to support multimedia delivery and mobility together with intelligent Internet services.
